The Five Pillars

What every student learns

Carnatic music rests on five interwoven disciplines. Our classes give each one the time and attention it deserves.

I.
Voice Culture

Breath control, sruti shuddhi, vocal stamina, and the discipline of singing in pitch with the tambura drone.

II.
Raga Vidya

The melodic frameworks — arohanam, avarohanam, gamakas, and the characteristic phrases that give each raga its emotional signature.

III.
Tala

Rhythmic cycles from Adi to complex Chapu talas — coordination, layam, claps and counts that anchor every composition.

IV.
Kriti Repertoire

Compositions of Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri, Purandaradasa, and the broader bhakti tradition.

V.
Manodharma

The improvisational soul of Carnatic music — alapana, niraval, and kalpana swaram — taught as the student matures.

Common Questions

What parents ask

My child has no prior musical background. Can they still join?

Absolutely. Our Foundations program is designed for complete beginners. We start with the most basic exercises — Sa Pa Sa, Sarali Varisai — and build gradually. No prior experience is needed; only enthusiasm and a willingness to practice a little each day.

What equipment do we need for online classes?

A laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space. We recommend a free tambura app (iTablaPro, Sruti, or similar) for practice. For instrumental classes, the student will need their instrument tuned and ready.

How long are the classes? How frequently?

Vocal classes range from 45 to 75 minutes depending on level, typically twice a week. Instrument classes are 45 minutes, once or twice weekly based on preference. Daily practice between classes — even 15 minutes — makes the most difference.

What is the best age to start?

Most students begin between ages 5 and 8, when the ear is highly receptive and habits form easily. However, sincere learners of any age — including adults — can start and progress meaningfully. We've taught beginners as old as 60 with beautiful results.

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes — every enrollment inquiry includes one complimentary trial class so you can experience the format and pedagogy before committing. The trial also gives the guru a chance to assess pitch, rhythm sense, and the right starting point for your child.

Are recordings of classes provided for practice?

Yes. Each class is recorded and shared securely so students can revisit lessons during the week. We also provide notation, audio reference tracks, and a weekly practice plan tailored to where the student is in the curriculum.
